Your brain on the internet: Are you affected?
How many windows are open on your screen right now? Do you have TweetDeck or HootSuite, or some other Twitter tool? How many times a day do you check your email/Facebook/text/etc? Can you even guess? I know I can’t.
Lately there has been a lot of attention given to our ever increasing divided attention. Can we actually multitask effectively? How is social media affecting our writing skills? Mr. Shirky and Mr. Carr recently threw into the ring their very different opinions about the internet and intelligence. This is clearly a subject that deserves much discussion and investigation, but I’m not even going to try and venture into that sort of topic right now. Today is about self tests that we attention-scarce multitaskers can actually devote a few minutes too.
The Times released two tests yesterday that analyze our ability to focus and effectively switch tasks. The research behind the test says that high multitaskers are less able to screen out irrelevant information, and are less efficient at switching tasks – this article gives a little more background on what the results might mean. See where you fall. Here are my results:
So how do you measure up? Are we in the advertising industry any better or worse off than average? Did you even make it to the end of this post? Hello, anyone out there?
I would be interested to see how you did and where you ranked. If I get enough results I will write a follow up post based on all your findings.

So Drew, you’re easily distracted but you complete tasks correctly. Wonder if that qualifies you for a job in air traffic control. Your eyes would constantly be searching the radar for oddities

i get enough air traffic control on my iPhone for the time being, plus that would require me going back to school and who’s kidding who I’m too lazy for that, plus apparently distracted.
